When I started the week last week, I thought it would be just another boring old week which would typically involve a lot of studying and revising and doing homework. Or 70% of the time, lazying around in bed watching Youtube. However, I was so honoured to have received a media pass to attend the Hitz FM Malaysian English Top 10 Awards at Star Xpo Centre @ Kenanga Wholesale City Fashion Mall on Saturday.
I love myself a good Malaysian English song, especially because I listen to more English songs than Malay. When I took a look at the line-up, I was very very excited to be at the show, hanging out with my favourite bloggers, vloggers, social media influencers and artists. I think it’s pretty funny that I get more excited about hanging out with people I recognise from Youtube and Instagram like Dan Khoo, Reuben Kang, Ernest Lee, than actual artists. I have to admit though, I was very excited to sit, stand, hang out, eat popcorn in the same room as Sonaone. If you don’t know, Sonaone is my favourite Malaysian English hip hop artist so I was very excited to see him for the second time in my life.
If you don’t know what the Malaysian English Top 10 (MET10) Awards is, it is an award show held by Hitz FM to celebrate Malaysian English artists, especially those who have been topping the Malaysian English Top 10 chart, which is played every Sunday from 3-4PM. This is actually the third instalment of the award show. I have to admit that a lot of the people who were nominated and who performed were strangers to me. I didn’t know a lot of them but those who I do know, are one of my favourites.
So, at the award show, we saw Sonaone, Joe Flizzow and Altimet open the show with their respective songs, Firefly, Gerek, Baek, Syukur and ended their performance with Havoc, which is the song they did together and blew up everyone’s radio.
Then, we saw other amazing performances by Paperplane Pursuit, Resh (formally known as Reshmonu), OJ Law, Jason Lo and more. At the show, I feel like there was a great bond between Hitz FM and other social media/internet personalities, instead of just musicians and performers. We saw a lot of these personalities at the show like Freeze (Sarawak represent!), who presented an award.
The award categories and winners are as below :
1) BEST MALE ARTIST – OJ LAW
2) BEST FEMALE ARTIST – ELIZABETH TAN
3) BEST BAND/GROUP – TRES EMPRE
4) BEST LIVE PERFORMER – KYOTO PROTOCOL
5) BEST BREAKTHROUGH ACT – DE FAM
6) BEST MUSIC VIDEO – JIN HACKMAN (BANANA)
7) BEST SONG – SUPERGIRLS (DE FAM)
De Fam basically stole the show by taking home two awards and they put on quite a show with their performance, where they performed two songs. I never used to like De Fam, just because I was very skeptical of their talent. Whether they’re just pretty faces or are they really good at their job? I actually saw them rehearse when I attended the opening of Nando’s at VivaCity, they made an appearance at the Parkson grand opening at VivaCity and they were amazing.
Last night, they blew my mind away, yet again, with an amazing performance. Their vocals are amazing, they can dance so well, they didn’t even lose a breath or at least I didn’t hear it. It’s not every day that you meet people who can actually dance and sing LIVE on stage without back play or anything so yeah, I was utterly impressed. Still am actually.
The highlight of the show was definitely OAG’s appearance, as they received their award for the Tune Talk Hall Of Fame award and they performed a couple of their classic OAG songs. I did not grow up during the prime time of OAG so I did not recognise any of the songs that they performed. I do know a couple of their Malay songs from the early 2000s but that’s it.
I will be posting a vlog of my trip to KL and of course, I’ll have a few clips of the event in that vlog so stay tuned for that very very soon!
Talk again soon,
