Chinese New Year is family time for everyone. I personally love Chinese New Year, it’s one of my favourite times of the year. I thought I would be doing some house-visiting this year but I think we’re skipping it. I might be visiting a couple of my friends but it wouldn’t be as festive as it was when I was a kid. Regardless, that didn’t stop my family from having our own time together. My dad just returned to Malaysia after doing his PhD research in India so as soon as the holidays began, he came back to Kuching.
I love it when my dad comes home because that means we go out for seafood. iCafe is our go-to Chinese seafood restaurant because it’s less popular and less hectic, compared to every other seafood restaurants in town, especially Topspot Seafood. However, we decided to change things up a bit and go to ABC Seafood at Topspot. Topspot is a huge seafood food court so you have many restaurants serving the same thing but they taste the same. I personally prefer Bukit Mata but for my family, ABC Seafood is the go-to.
Then, on Sunday, my grandparents invited us over for lunch so we went over and had the most Malay lunch we could have. Well, it felt Malay. My grandmother cooked fish head curry (which isn’t Malay at all), ayam masak merah, tempoyak, salted duck eggs and we brought over stir-fried mixed vegetables, which I cooked. It felt very warm and nice, especially to be around family.
Happy Chinese New Year to everyone who’s celebrating! May this year bring you more prosperity than last year!
