On my final day in Kuala Lumpur, I made it a point to have brunch at Breakfast Thieves before my flight at 4PM. I’ve seen a few of my Instagram followings eat here and the food looks so good, I just had to give it a try.

This restaurant was originally opened by a couple of Malaysians in Melbourne in 2012. After a good few years, they have finally opened a branch in Bangsar. The menu is small but filled with scrumptious breakfast delights that include a lot of gastronomical expertise.

I ordered the My French Lady which is essentially a french toast served with strawberry, thyme, salted dark chocolate soil, lemon curd, raspberry cream and wait for it … mixed sesame shards. I thought I was in Masterchef for a second there. If I have to put it in simpler words, it’s a french toast with a bunch of fancy ingredients. It doesn’t only sound and look good, it tastes good too. Every single element on the plate went really well together, and the bread was so buttery, it hurts. If you don’t like something sweet for breakfast/brunch or you don’t have a sweet tooth in general, you might not like it because it is, really really sweet. If you’re thinking of ordering this, you might want to share it with a friend because it can get a bit much.

My date, on the other hand, ordered the Gypsy King which is an assembly of garlic rosemary polenta bars with beetroot, cured salmon trout, pickled radish, oyster mushrooms, avocado mousse and poached eggs. Again, very fancy. I didn’t even know there’s a such thing as a salmon trout. To be honest with you, I like this more than the French Lady just because it’s savoury and has more complex flavours. I’ve never had polenta bars before so this was my first time. It tasted very familiar, almost like vadei but slightly different. The salmon trout tasted really fresh when eaten with the mushrooms and polenta.

Since I was still salivating from the summer drink I had at Rimba Rusa, I decided to order one of their fizzy drinks but it fell short. I don’t remember what it’s called but it was mango, passionfruit and mint. It was very sour, just not my cup of tea.

I can’t form a final opinion on the restaurant because I’ve only tried a small portion of the menu, which is again quite small. However, I do think it’s worth the try if you’re looking for a fancy place to have brunch and gastronomical sex in your mouth.
