ATTENDING THE ERAFM DIGITAL MUSIC AWARDS!

How long has it been since I’ve attended an actual event? Too long that I can’t remember. Astro was very kind to send me a media invitation to one of their latest projects, the ERA fm Digital Music Awards so I couldn’t just pass up on the opportunity. For the past year or so, I’ve come to really appreciate Malaysian music. I don’t listen to it 24/7 but I appreciate what’s being played on the radio a lot more than I used to. The Digital Music Awards was held to introduce new and young talents to the world, especially to a younger audience. The show was aired on Facebook Live and Astro On-The-Go as an attempt to engage in the younger audience. It wasn’t a huge and grand award show like the ones we’re used to. It was very small and humble, which is a good thing because it means there are higher chances for the line of new talents to be recognised and appreciated by the show’s audience.

There were a total of six awards with 24 nominees and 8 performances. At the event, a few social media influencers were attendees and given a lot of attention as well. Some of them are my personal favourites; Luqman Podolski and Sterk Productions. If you don’t know who they are, then you’re missing out. If you don’t appreciate their humor like I do, then I apologize. I was more excited to meet those guys than all the other celebrities in the room.

I was really flustered at first because it has been so long since I’ve actually attended an event like this. I was awkward and I didn’t know how to socialise. To be honest with you, I am the worst when it comes to social events. I just can’t do it, it’s nerve-wrecking and scary. So, what I did was arrive at the venue, avoided any kind of social interaction and went straight to my seat.

It was actually a very interesting event, it was nothing like what I was expecting. Again, it was very small and short. I think the audience were by invitation only so it was a very small crowd. The performances were mostly acoustic and gave a very busking kind of vibe which can be liked according to preference. It wasn’t a massive production, at all. There were performances by Altimet, Sufian Suhaimi, Aiman Tino, Khai Bahar, Haqiem Rosli and a few other new names in the music industry. The host was Nabil Ahmad, who is again, one of my very favourites so I really appreciated his presence on stage.

Overall, I think it was slightly too short. It went on for an hour and a half which, I personally think, didn’t give people enough time to warm up to the show. However, since the younger generation is known for their short attention span, I guess an hour and a half was to engage them and pull them in. What I find to be a flaw is that the show was being aired online, which is not that accessible to people, especially when our internet is not that fast to begin with. I tried watching the broadcast on their Facebook Page on the next day and it kept on buffering, which is not a good thing. I also read the comments and there weren’t a lot of good ones around. A lot of people just didn’t know what was going on. Since this is something very new, I think they did a very good job with a lot of room for improvements. New things are always experimental so you can never expect how it would turn out.

Talk again soon,
