If you don’t know, I’m an avid Youtube watcher. I go on Youtube and watch videos almost every single day. In June 2016, thanks to Joan Kim and Edward Avila, I was introduced to the k-beauty world on Youtube, a world that I didn’t know existed. I’ve always known that k-beauty was a thing but I didn’t know it in depth; I didn’t know what was it all about, the products and what makes it so special compared to your regular western beauty industry. Once I opened the door to the k-beauty world, there was no way out. I’m officially addicted.

I watch Joan Kim’s videos religiously and when she mentioned in one of her recent vlogs that she was coming to Malaysia with COSRX, I was beyond excited. I was already planning my outfit, my make-up, my gift for her even before she mentioned the time and the place. I was pretty disappointed when I found out that the meet and greet with her was a private event and only the selected few could attend but luckily, she mentioned that anyone can come and see her after the event and that’s exactly what I did. It was my first time at a meet and greet and my first time meeting someone from Youtube (like a non-Malaysian Youtuber). I was so happy to see her, my hands were actually shaking. The first few words I said to her were, “OMG you need to breathe”. She was so frantic because there was a long line of people waiting to see her and we only had 30 minutes left until the public meet and greet ended. We spoke, hugged and took pictures within 3 minutes.

The next day, I woke up and decided to go to NU Sentral because I wanted to do a bit of shopping there. Then, I opened Instagram and Joan said she was at KLCC and anyone can come by and meet her so that’s what I did. Thankfully, NU Sentral is connected to KL Sentral so I hopped on the LRT on my own, for the very first time and went to KLCC. I haven’t been to KLCC for a solid decade and this was the perfect opportunity to finally go and see what’s new at the Twin Tower. I’m so happy that I got that chance to meet her at Eight Ounce Coffee KLCC, sat beside her (like we were centimetres apart) and talked for an hour. It was so nice and cool. She’s such a nice person and I love just how much she actually cares about other people and how she pays attention to her viewers. She actually remembers the cupcakes that I gave her at the meet and greet, and some of the comments I’ve left on her video. Like, I was telling her about me seeing NCT and she said, “Were you the one who left the comment about it on my video?” and I’m like, oh my God, I can’t believe that she actually read my comment and remembers it.

I don’t know if you can call it hanging out but like talking to her felt so easy because I feel like I was talking to a long distance friend. It was so easy to converse and make conversation, even when I’m so socially awkward sometimes like I don’t know how to talk to people, but with her it was so easy because I feel like I know her, because I watch her videos all the time. I don’t know, everything about this feels so surreal. Now I’m waiting for all the UK Youtubers to come.

Talk again soon,
Hani Lutfi
